Trump & Congress want to take away your right to vote. Let's fight back in court.
Trump’s executive order attack on voting rights and the SAVE Act are dangerous assaults on our freedom. Here’s how we’re fighting back—and how you can too.
While we watch the American economy reel under the weight of poorly designed, incompetently executed tariffs, we must not lose sight of what matters most to the future of American democracy: our free and fair elections.
Protecting every citizen's right to choose our leaders must remain a top priority, even as we’re distracted by the very real trade war being waged on us — and the world — by our president. Which means we MUST focus on Trump’s recent anti-voter executive order and the radical SAVE Act coming up for a vote in the House of Representatives next week.
Trump’s shocking executive order attempts to hijack federal election law. It forces proof-of-citizenship requirements onto millions of eligible voters and even tries to illegally rewrite federal voter registration forms. Let’s be clear: this is an outrageous, unconstitutional power grab. So we’re fighting back.
Bright America is proud to fuel a new lawsuit brought by our strategic partner Campaign Legal Center (CLC) to stop this executive overreach in its tracks. This case is about more than one order — it’s about defending our Constitution, our freedom to vote, and the right of the people to choose their leaders.
Let’s walk through what’s going on, why it matters, and what you can do to help.
The Trump Executive Order: Unlawful and Un-American
The executive order instructs federal agencies — including the independent U.S. Election Assistance Commission — to impose harsh proof-of-citizenship requirements that go beyond what the law allows. Over 21 million eligible Americans lack immediate access to the kind of documents Trump now wants to require to register to vote.
Even worse, the order targets mail-in voting, including for overseas and military voters, by attempting to ban the counting of ballots that arrive after Election Day — even if they were mailed on time. It’s reckless, punitive, and unconstitutional.
The Constitution gives Congress, not the president, the power to set national voting standards. And this move violates the separation of powers, plain and simple.
The SAVE Act: A New Name for Voter Suppression
If you thought the executive order was bad, wait until you hear about the SAVE Act.
Under this bill, every single voter would be required to show documentary proof of citizenship — a passport, birth certificate, or naturalization certificate — to register or even to update their registration. That means no driver’s licenses, no student or military IDs, no DMV registration help. And for millions of Americans, especially young voters, married women (the names on all of your documents would have to match!), and disadvantaged communities, those documents are either difficult or expensive to access.
It would effectively end online and mail registration, gut voter registration drives, and make it easier for states to kick voters off the rolls without even notifying them. If that sounds like a recipe for mass disenfranchisement, it’s because it is.
There is no evidence of widespread noncitizen voting. The SAVE Act is a solution in search of a problem. Or, put another way, it’s really a response to a conspiracy theory in service of an egomaniacal personality disorder.
Why This Moment Matters
Our movement is about more than policy. It’s about protecting the soul of American democracy — because that will be at the heart of our vision for a brighter America when this dark chapter closes.
The right to vote is how we stop catastrophic policies from taking hold — like the destructive trade war President Trump is waging on the American people. Tariffs that raise prices on everyday goods, hurt small businesses, and tank key industries don’t get reversed by complaining on social media. They get reversed through our collective advocacy, legal challenges, AND our sacred right to vote.
But if they can take away your right to vote before you even get to the ballot box, they win by default.
We won’t let that happen.
Here’s How You Can Help
This is an all-hands-on-deck moment. Here’s how you can stand up for democracy:
1. Fund the Legal Fight❗️ Help us fuel lawsuits like the one Bright America is supporting through our strategic partner Campaign Legal Center. These cases are our constitutional firewall. [Chip in here to support the legal battle.]
2. Call Congress❗️Tell your Representative and Senators: Vote NO on the SAVE Act. Calls, emails, and letters matter. They really do. Especially when thousands of us raise our voices together.
3. Show Up❗️Peaceful rallies are happening around the country today, Saturday, April 5th! Be there if you can. Bring a friend. Bring a sign. Let the public square — and the rest of the world! — know where the people stand.
4. Speak Out❗️Use your social media, write a letter to your local paper, talk to your neighbors. Our democracy is worth defending out loud. Here’s a post you can use!
We have faced dark moments before. But history belongs to those who stand up and fight for a better future. Let’s be those people.
Let’s be the light in this moment.
Let’s be Bright America.
I'm not at all interested in what you have to say. You're latest communication about Tariffs and Trump's determination to even up the tariff charges around the world. I am fullyy aware of how unfair other countries have been in trade and tariffs. I do watch Fox News and certain podcasts on Youtube - mostly Bill O'Reilly and Victor Davis Hansen. So I'm not completely subject to your propaganda against Trump and Trump's willingness to fight for our country. Other presidents in my lifetime have expressed the need for this effort. But none have had the gumption to challenge the political climate that might destroy thier political lives. Trump doesn't need a political career. He does have an interest in the progress, growth and stability of America. So he will do this and I pray his agenda survives the storm.
